General questions
- How much drywall experience do you have?
- 11 years of drywall experience: hanging, taping, finishing, texture and repairs for homeowners, landlords and builders.
- How much does drywall repair cost in Kearney?
- It depends on the size of the damage, ceiling vs. wall, and texture. Small patches are usually a quick job; water-damaged ceilings or large sections take longer. Call or send photos through the estimate form for a free quote.
- Can you match my existing wall texture?
- Yes. Orange peel, knockdown and smooth finishes can be matched so the repair blends in after paint.
- Do you also paint?
- Yes. Repairs can be primed and painted, or whole rooms can be painted.
- Which towns do you serve?
- Kearney, Lexington, Grand Island, Holdrege, Hastings, Cozad, Gothenburg, Gibbon, Elm Creek, Minden, Shelton and Overton, NE. Call to check your town.
- How do I get a free estimate?
- Call (308) 270-3643, or use the estimate form and attach a description of the job. A few photos of the damage help give a quicker, clearer quote.
- Do you work for builders and contractors?
- Yes. Hang-and-tape and finishing work is available for builders and general contractors as well as homeowners and landlords.
Drywall Repair
- Can a small hole be patched without replacing the whole sheet?
- Yes. Most holes are cut square, backed, patched, taped and finished. Only large or water-soft areas need a new section of board.
- Why do cracks come back over doorways?
- Door and window corners move as a house settles. A lasting repair re-tapes the joint with fresh mud and tape instead of just filling the crack.
- Will I be able to see the patch?
- The goal is a patch you can't spot after paint: feathered edges, matched texture and primer before paint.
Drywall Installation
- What thickness of drywall is used?
- Walls usually get 1/2-inch board. Ceilings, garages and fire-rated areas often need 5/8-inch or a specific rated board, so it depends on the room and code.
- Do you install moisture-resistant board?
- Yes, in bathrooms, laundry rooms and other damp areas, with cement board where tile goes in wet zones.
- Do you work for builders and contractors?
- Yes. Hang-and-tape work is available for builders and general contractors as well as homeowners.
Taping, Finishing & Texture
- What finish level do I need?
- Garages and areas behind tile often only need a lower level. Living spaces usually get level 4. Walls with bright side light or glossy paint look best at level 5 (a full skim).
- How long does mud need to dry?
- Each coat has to dry before the next one, so finishing usually takes a few visits over several days, depending on humidity and the type of mud.
Interior Painting
- Does new drywall need primer?
- Yes. Bare drywall and fresh mud soak up paint differently, so a drywall primer keeps patches from showing through (called flashing).
- Can you paint just the repaired wall?
- Yes. If the old paint color is known or can be matched, the repaired wall can be painted corner to corner so there's no visible touch-up.
Texture Matching
- Can you match texture from a photo?
- A close-up photo taken from the side helps identify the texture for the estimate. The final match is dialed in on site.
- Why does a patch still show after paint?
- Usually the texture or sheen doesn't match, or the patch wasn't primed. Matching texture and priming before paint fixes both.
Water-Damaged Ceiling Repair
- Can a water stain just be painted over?
- Only if the board is dry and still solid. Then a stain-blocking primer goes on before paint. Soft, sagging or crumbling board needs to be cut out and replaced.
- Should the leak be fixed first?
- Yes. Repairing the ceiling before the leak is fixed and the area is dry means the stain or damage comes back.
Basement Drywall
- Is framing and insulation done first?
- Yes. Drywall goes up after framing, insulation, electrical and plumbing rough-ins are done and inspected where required.
- Do basements need special drywall?
- Damp spots like bathrooms and laundry rooms get moisture-resistant board. Any active water problem should be fixed before drywall goes up.
Garage Drywall
- Does an attached garage need fire-rated drywall?
- Building codes usually require fire-rated (Type X) board on the wall and ceiling shared with the house. Check your local code or permit; it's included in the estimate.
- Does a garage need a smooth finish?
- Not always. Many garages are taped to a lower finish level, which costs less. A higher level is available if the garage will be painted or used as a shop.
Popcorn Ceiling Removal
- Do I need an asbestos test first?
- Popcorn ceilings installed before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos. Have a sample tested by a certified lab before removal; if it's positive, it must be handled by a licensed abatement company.
- Is the ceiling smooth after scraping?
- Usually not right away. Scraping leaves marks and seams, so the ceiling is skim coated or re-textured before paint.
Skim Coating
- When is skim coating better than new drywall?
- When the board is solid but the surface is rough, torn or patchy. If the board is soft, water-damaged or broken, it gets replaced instead.
- Does torn drywall paper need anything first?
- Yes. Torn paper is sealed with a primer made for it before skim coating, or it bubbles under the mud.
New Construction Drywall
- Do you work as a subcontractor?
- Yes. Builders and general contractors can call to set up hang-and-tape work on their projects.
- What do you need for a bid?
- Plans or room sizes, ceiling heights, the finish level and texture you want, and your timeline.
